2009 Scholarship Winners Announced
A s part of its efforts to recognize and encourage academic achievements in all disciplines, The
Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi sponsors an annual Study Abroad Grant competition. The program is
designed to help support students at institutions with active Phi Kappa Phi chapters as they seek knowl-
edge and experience in their academic field by studying abroad. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi awards 50
Study Abroad grants of $1,000 each with a maximum of three awards per institution.
Two current Ohio State students have each earned a 2009 study abroad grant from the Honor Society
of Phi Kappa Phi! Honors student Ashley Bartman will be using the grant to go to Florence, Italy where
she will study art conservation and art history at The Studio Art Centers International (SACI). Mount
Leadership Society Scholar Molly Van Hart will be using the grant to volunteer at an orphanage run by
Save Lives Foundation in Nepal, an opportunity she located through an organization called
"Volunteering Solutions."
Ashley is a second year studying anthropology. Molly is a third year international studies major. Con-
gratulations Ashley and Molly, we are so very proud of you and your accomplishments!
“Let the love of learning rule humanity.”

OSU PKP Student Organization
I n its second year of existence, the Phi Kappa Phi student group at The Ohio State University
has made tremendous strides as a newly formed student organization on campus. This year we
strengthened our ties to the Harambee School located in the South Linden area of Columbus. This pri-
vate school was established to serve as a safe haven for low-income, socioeconomically disadvantaged
children of Columbus. The school currently serves K-5 and holds various events for community mem-
bers. Members of the student group have been serving the school in a variety of different ways
throughout the 2008-2009 school year. Some members choose to volunteer as tutors at the school
every week, while others who cannot commit to a weekly schedule prefer to help out with various
events the school holds.
The benefits of establishing ties with Harambee are already apparent. Volunteers get the chance
to pass along some of their knowledge to the developing minds of tomorrow. In addition, volunteers act
as mentors to many of the kids and are frequently greeted with hugs when entering a classroom. The
children, too, have greatly benefited from the relationship. They are able to take advantage of more in-
dividual time to work on their hard subjects and in the process they develop strong relationships with the
volunteers. We are exceptionally pleased with the progression of the student group and the impact we
have made on the children at Harambee.
Five PKP Members Chosen As Truman Scholars
S elected on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual abil-
ity, and likelihood of ‘making a difference,’ five Phi Kappa Phi
members were represented among the 2009 Truman Scholars.
Each scholarship is valued at $30,000 to be used for graduate study. Additionally, scholars are pro-
vided an advantage for priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate
institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship oppor-
tunities within the federal government.
Established in 1975 by Congress, the Truman Scholarship Foundation honors the thirty-third Presi-
dent and exists to award scholarships to college students who plan to attend graduate school in
preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service.
The five Phi Kappa Phi members named as Truman Scholars are:
John Edward Campion, United States Naval Academy
Reynaldo A. Fuentes, University of Wyoming
Jennifer Nicole Lamb, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
Amelia Nichols, Carnegie Mellon University
Alexandra Rosenberg, United States Military Academy
